 Web Browsers
A Browser is a program used to view, download, upload, surf or otherwise access pages on the World  Wide Web.   All browsers are not the same - and even vary between versions.  The difference is usually in the way a browser reads graphics and frames.   A good web designer takes in to account all browsers and versions and designs pages that can be viewed by all.    The most popular are Netscape and Microsoft Explorer - the older versions of AOL and WebTv have graphic viewer problems.  Browsers can be downloaded for free.

Naming Your Site
Naming your site will be based upon the domain names that are available but you will  be able to title your pages and select different titles for each and every page.  The title of your page is probably the most single most important factor in obtaining a high search engine placement.  It works just like the phone directory and you've seen how businesses use AAA Company or ABC Company to get a higher listing.  The same principle applies in web page titles.

Setting Up A Domain Name
InterNIC is the worldwide domain registration authority and charges $35.00 per year with the first two years paid in advance.
.
 BASIC DOMAIN RULES:
Your may use .com, .net, .org, .edu, .cc, or .to. Com is the most popular and denotes a commercial site and Net is second.  Org denots an organization and edu and school or university.   Use only letters, numbers, or dashes ("-").  Your domain name cannot begin or end with a dash and cannot have more than 26 characters total.  The shorter the name and the easier to spell the better.  The larger Webhosting Services will also take care of your registration as part of the services they provide.   Everything you ever wanted to know about domain names can be found here:

Picking A Webhosting Service
This may not seem like it but this is an incredibly important decision.   Lots of companies offer web space - some geared for low volume and lots of gimicks.  There are also lots of horror stories of sites that have been shut down during their peak volume times because they exceeded their traffic (file transfer rate) or sites that you try and visit that are either not available because their provider is down or you get the standard server busy message.  The absolute worst are those host services that file themselves as the Administrative Contact of your site.  It enables them to actually steal your site if you try and move it  (or at least hold you hostage).   Selecting a webhosting service is not the place where you want to economize.
.
If you are going to shop around then here is what you need
to look for and read any agreement carefully:
1.  Set Up Fees
2.  Monthly Fees
3.  Traffic Costs
4.  Live Tech Support
5.  Commercial Restrictions
6.  Standard UNIX - Telnet and FTP
7. SSI enabled
8. CGI executables
9. C compiler (gcc)
10. Good stats pages

Having A Secured Server
If you are having your visitors transmit sensitive information you will need a secured server.   If you are interested in "e-commerce" which is the tranmission of orders and credit card information you may want to consider a company such as PSDM  that can establish a  Merchant ID for real-time credit card processing. This process does not require the installation of a secured server.  For a secured server you will first need to to get a Secure Certificate.   The most popular ones  are Verisign and Thawte.   There is a cost involved and a reliable Webhosting service can help advise what is best sutied for your particular needs.

FTP Utility
FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol, or a standard method of transferring files from your computer to you web space.  Some web have FTP capabilities.  Mac and PC's use different utilities.
